Maimonides Hebrew Day School
Wellness Policy
Effective Sept 1  2025

Purpose

Maimonides Hebrew Day School is committed to providing a healthy and supportive environment that promotes the overall well-being of our students. This wellness policy outlines our approach to nutrition, physical activity, and other wellness initiatives.

Nutrition

  • Nutrition Standards: We will follow the nutrition standards set by the NSLP and ensure that all food and beverages sold or served on campus meet these standards.
  • Food Options: We will provide a variety of healthy food options, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources.
  • Nutrition Education: We will incorporate nutrition education into our curriculum to promote healthy eating habits.

Physical Activity

  • Physical Education: We will provide regular physical education classes that promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
  • Recess and Playtime: We will provide regular recess and playtime opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.
  • Extracurricular Activities: We will offer extracurricular activities that promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Other Wellness Initiatives

  • Mental Health Support: We will provide support for students’ mental health and well-being, including counseling services and stress management techniques.
  • Healthy Environment: We will maintain a healthy and safe environment, including clean facilities and adequate lighting and ventilation.
  • Celebrations must align with the school’s nutrition guidelines and allergy protocols. Parents must obtain prior approval from both the principal and classroom teacher regarding what types of snacks or treats are permitted. Homemade items are restricted, and healthier options are encouraged. Non-food alternatives (e.g., stickers, books, or games) are also welcomed as celebratory gestures.

Implementation and Evaluation

  • Wellness Committee: We will establish a wellness committee to oversee the implementation of this policy and evaluate its effectiveness.
  • Annual Evaluation: Whereas the policy is effect for two years, we will conduct an informal annual evaluation of this policy reviewing comments and feedback of the administration and parent body to ensure it is meeting its goals and make revisions as needed.
