| As the Maimonides School is in a capital
campaign to purchase and renovate the former Tiferet Israel synagogue on
Partridge Street, the TNT Program at Maimonides is interviewing and filming
former members of the synagogue about their memories of the synagogue and of
Jewish life in Albany NY in the 1940's and 1950's.
This exciting project gives our students an opportunity to better
appreciate recent history first-hand, and helps preserve these valuable and
inspirational memories for future generations.
The digital video will be edited on computer in our TNT lab at
Maimonides, and eventually the transcripts of the interviews will be
published in journal form.
We gratefully acknowledge assistance in this project from the Morris
Gerber Old Albany Collection, the Temple Israel Historian, and the number of
former members of Tiferet Israel (now Albany's Temple Israel) who shared
their recollections and provided valuable leads. Each additional interview
opens new horizons to follow, and while we can not follow every lead, we
recognize that this project has grown tremendously. We are looking for
sponsors to help provide funding for this project.
If you would like to be part of this project or if you know someone we
can contact, please call our school office at 453-9363 or Rabbi Mendel, TNT
Director, at 438-4227. You can also e-mail TNT at
