Water Systems in Ancient Israel
a project with R' Ran Reshef

There are several water systems that were used in ancient Israel to get water.  Rav Ran explained them to us in great detail. We then divided into small teams to prepare dioramas to display the various types of systems. Many of these remain in use today, though in modernized forms.

At a display for other classes, Rav Ran went through each project and explained the method and how it works. This is called "Bor Mayim" or a Water Pit. A cistern is created below ground for water to gather, and water is drawn up as needed with the pail.
This is an "above" view of Jerusalem. Underneath it (the box opens) is a underground channel bringing water throughout the city. This soil and rock filter demonstrates how water is purified by passing through these various stages.

A model of a terraced mountain, where the water gathers in pools
at each level before descending to the next level.

"Hmm, so that's how filters work!"

Here a student explains her own project to others.

More explanations... Good questions, Good answers.

This demonstrates the progression of water from stream to pools,
down to the pipes leading to fields for irrigation.

This cross-section of a mountain, shows a water cistern built into it's side, in open caves and tunnels. That collected water drips slowly onto the fields planted on the sides of the mountain.
