"When Zayde was Young"
a musical multi-media performance by the Maimonides Boys Davening Class,
based on the creative and amusing tape series by Shmuel Kunda. All songs
were written by Shmuel Kunda and used with permission. A Powerpoint
slideshow was shown to the right of the boys on the entire back wall of the
stage, accompanying each stanza of each song with relevant pictures and song
lyrics. |
 |
| Anshei Kartoful: We opened with this
amusing song about a make-believe synagogue on the Lower East Side, since it
connected well with our ongoing
Partridge Street Oral History Project, researching the lives of the
Jewish community back when our future school building was used as a
synagogue.
From Left to Right Kobi Avital, Aharon Simon, Eli O'Brien, Yisroli
Backman, Shlomo Morrison, Ethan Ehrlich, Motti Rubin, Elimelech Backman,
Daniel Hertzberg, Chaim Simon, Tzemach Simon. |
 |
| The Chally Song: This is an old favorite
of our Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Israel Rubin, who sang it often as Rabbi at Camp
Emunah. While Challah from a Kosher Bakery is good, there's something
special when the traditional Challah Bread comes along with a personal
touch. |
 |
| Here Comes The Trolley. Nowadays, we all
have cars. Back then, very few had cars on the Lower East Side of New York,
and most everyone used Public Transportation. The Trolley was more than a
means to get from here to there, it has a personality all its own. |
 |
| Our Grandparents: Here you can see a
ship coming from Europe into New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty
visible on left. This song is about the immigrant experience to a new life
in America. |
 |
| Lower East Side Anthem: See the Brooklyn
Bridge, the tenement housing, and the laundry hanging on clotheslines. You
can even see a little pushcart which sold all kinds of things in the street.

Thanks to Mrs. Raizy Rubin and the High School girls for painting our
beautiful scenery. Thanks to Shmuel Kunda for letting us use his
creative and humorous songs. Thanks to Maimonides TNT for making the giant
Powerpoint slideshow on the back wall of the stage. We enjoyed practicing
and singing these funny songs each morning for a few minutes following our
Tefilah/Davening class. We're very happy that everyone else enjoyed them so
much, too.
